A Gwinnett County attorney has taken her oath of office for the State Court bench, becoming the very first African American judge in county history.
Ronda Colvin-Leary, an attorney for 17 years - the last 11 in private practice - was sworn in Thursday, according to published reports.
She told CBS 46 she always knew the law was the profession she wanted to follow.
"In 2018, you would think there would be no more firsts, but there are," Colvin-Leary told the television station. "I remember growing up the law - the court system - being so important to people in the community."
With her election earlier this year, Colvin-Leary became the first African-American elected to a countywide office in Gwinnett County.
The judge, an Alabama native, lives in Snellville with her family.
