Man shot, wounded in altercation with Athens-Clarke County police

A man has been hospitalized in an officer-involved shooting in Athens.

The incident happened when a Athens-Clarke County police officers responded to a domestic violence call at University Gardens Apartments located on Baxter Drive Saturday afternoon. According to a release from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, officers were confronted by a man from North Carolina who was armed with a machete.

According to the release, the man ignored commands to drop the weapon and attacked one of the officers.  The officer fired at the man, striking him.  The man was transported to an area hospital, where he remains in serious condition.

The name of the suspect and the name of the police officer have not been released. 

No officers were injured in the incident. 

The GBI is continuing to investigate.  Once complete, it will be turned over to the Athens-Clarke County District Attorney’s Office for review.
