Interest in elementary school club morphs into work to create a lacrosse league

Posted 6:00PM on Saturday 12th October 2019 ( 5 years ago )

Kids who want to play lacrosse in Forsyth, Dawson, and Lumpkin counties will soon have a new league available to them.

Forsyth County School Resource Officer Andrew Cheek said the problem started because some elementary aged children who wanted to play couldn't afford the cost and the kids whose families could afford the fees still couldn't play because there were not enough students signed up for the team.

He spoke to AccessWDUN on behalf of a group of people working to start a non-profit organization that will gather the equipment needed to help with the costs of playing.

"We started a Go Fund Me page at East Forsyth Youth Lacrosse Club so we could raise the money to get these kids started playing," Cheek explained. "While we were doing all this, we didn't have a place to play in the county. So, we met with Dawson County the Parks and Rec(reation) Director there and he's giving us a chance to start our league up there."

Cheek said the initial goal is to raise enough money to buy enough equipment to create a starter team.

"So, the initial gift is going to go to the 4th and 5th grade kids and we're going to play up to 3rd graders to play on this team. It's basically a starter team," he said.

Right now, the group has applied for a 501(c)3 and has been recognized by the state. This allows them to receive donations of either money or equipment to put towards the project.

The plan, according to Cheek, is to have kids from east Forsyth, Dawson, and Lumpkin counties all be able to play at Veterans Memorial Park in Dawson County.
