Jackson County authorities are investigating a residential fire that killed a family pet late in the afternoon on Christmas Eve.
Multiple crews were dispatched to the Hoschton-area home around 4:21 p.m., where Jackson Trail Fire Department Chief David Coholich said they found smoke pouring out of a back door.
"The home was located in the 7000 block of Jackson Trail Road," he said. When Jackson Trail units arrived on the scene, they found the result of the smoke to be caused by a kitchen fire."
Coholich said the fire was handled quickly by firefighters from Jackson Trail and the nearby West Jackson Fire Department, at which point a search of the home was carried out.
"During the crews continued efforts to search for fire spread, victims and animals, the firefighters found a dog in the residence and she had stopped breathing."
He continued: "The firefighters moved the pet to the front porch where oxygen was administered & CPR performed. Sadly, the pet did not survive."
No other deaths or injuries were reported as a result of the fire.
In addition to the units dispatched by the Jackson Trail and West Jackson fire departments, Coholich said crews from the Jackson County Correctional Institute were also called to the scene. That dispatch was cancelled after the fire was quickly extinguished.
