The Gwinnett County Commission and the Georgia Department of Transportation will continue a partnership to make improvements along State Route 316 - specifically changing intersections to interchanges along the route.

GDOT agreed to pay up to $1,938,809 for its part of the funding for the design of what's called grade-separated interchanges; the county will use funding from the 2017 SPLOST to match the money from the state.

The newest interchanges are planned at Hurricane Trail and U.S. 29/State Route 8/Winder Highway, according to press information released by the county this week.

The agreement is part of a continued partnership with the Georgia DOT for improvements to the State Route 316 corridor from Hi-Hope Road to Harbins Road. County officials said the projects will improve mobility and safety along the corridor.

"I appreciate the state’s commitment to working with the county to make the much-traveled State Route 316 corridor safer. The Georgia DOT has been a great partner in this endeavor," District 4 Commissioner Marlene Fosque said.

This project is currently in the preliminary engineering phase and construction is anticipated to begin in 2023. Other projects that are part of the corridor improvements include interchanges at Hi-Hope Road and Harbins Road.

Gwinnett County began construction on the Harbins Road interchange project earlier this year and anticipates completion in 2022. The Georgia DOT is managing the Hi-Hope Road interchange project, which is also in the preliminary engineering phase.

“Voter approval of SPLOST and a strong working relationship with GDOT allow us to make our roadways safer,” said District 3 Commissioner Tommy Hunter. “Our long term goal is to fully convert 316 to freeway standards to improve mobility and freight movement in Gwinnett County. Our continued working relationship with GDOT will allow us to leverage our SPLOST dollars to attain this goal.”
