The Georgia Department of Transportation is ready to begin a major grinding and striping project for I-985.
According to information from GDOT's Northeast District, the work will start Monday, March 18 and will include road closures during the day and the evening.
On Monday, GDOT maintenance forces will work during the day on I-985 northbound to replace concrete slabs. The work will close the right lane between I-85 and State Route 20. The schedule will have work going on weekdays between 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., continue through Friday, April 5.
Additionally, the grinding and striping project awarded in October 2018 to Diamond Surface Inc. will begin Monday night in the same area of I-985. This project will allow lane closures overnight between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. Sunday to Friday.
"We understand this will be inconvenient for the I-985 commuters with daytime and nighttime closures until the first week of April. However, the good news is after this project is completed the entire 96 [lane] miles from the Interstate 85 split to Jesse Jewell will be a brand new driving surface,” said GDOT Assistant District Engineer Brandon Kirby in a press statement.
The 96 miles Kirby mentions refers to so-called lane miles, four 24-mile lanes in each direction
Kirby said after the grinding operations are complete, the driving surface will receive upgraded pavement markings and raised pavement markers.
