LOUISVILLE, Ky. - For the first time this season, the University of North Georgia softball team is on top of the NFCA National Poll as they claimed the No. 1 ranking, as announced by the association Wednesday morning. UNG claimed 11 of the 16 first-place votes, with the remaining five going to No. 2 Central Oklahoma.
The Nighthawks knocked off a pair of ranked teams, then-No. 21 Wingate and then-No. 2 West Florida, to start the week. They rolled into Peach Belt Conference play, sweeping UNC Pembroke and Francis Marion in a pair of league doubleheaders.
North Georgia held the No. 1 ranking for the final three weeks of the regular season a year ago.
West Florida, Chico State and Southern Arkansas round out the top five. Other teams from the southeast region that are ranked are No. 9 Carson-Newman and No. 23 Lincoln Memorial.
The Nighthawks will take on Young Harris on Sunday. First pitch of the PBC doubleheader is at 1 p.m.
