Gainesville High School was on lockdown for a major part of the school day Wednesday after a student found a threat written on a wall at the school.
Sgt. Kevin Holbrook with the Gainesville Police Department said the student found the message around 10 a.m.
"The threat was made inside the school. It's a threat that was written out, so there was not a verbal threat," Holbrook said. "It was one that a student had noticed [and] that student went to administration immediately and administration began working with the school resource officers on scene."
Holbrook said the officers determined they needed to call in authorities from both the Gainesville Police Department and the Hall County Sheriff's Office.
He said no one was allowed to leave or enter the school buildings while officers did sweeps of the property with K-9s. While that was happening, school officials had to make sure students were able to eat lunch, while staying safe.
"The administration wanted to make sure all the students were able to get fed properly. We wanted to make sure the students were in place in their classes before we released everything back to normal operations," Holbrook said.
He said the school was cleared for normal operations around 2 p.m.
In addition to searching Gainesville High School, authorities also conducted searches at the 9th Grade Academy and Centennial Elementary School, which are located in the same area. Holbrook said the threat was specific to GHS, but the other schools were checked as a precaution.
Holbrook said the police department will have extra patrols at the school for the remainder of the week.
An investigation to determine who wrote the threatening message is underway.
