Pollen counts at highest since 2013

Posted 1:02PM on Friday 5th April 2019 ( 5 years ago )

According to the Atlanta Allergy and Asthma Clinic, not only have we seen the highest pollen levels of the year, but we have reached record breaking numbers.

Thursday's pollen count was recorded at 3,065, while Friday's count more than doubled at 6,262. Friday's pollen level was the third highest ever recorded.

Kevin Schaffer, an allergist with Atlanta Allergy and Asthma, said you can tell that an allergy season will be bad based on how early the high pollen counts start. We are certainly early into the season, pollen levels usually reach their peak later in April, he said.

"This one is standing out as a horrible year," Schaffer told the AJC.

Oak, pine, sycamore, willow and sweet gum trees are the biggest contributors to the pollen levels, but grass and weed pollens are on the rise.
