Faster broadband speeds available in Northeast Georgia

Windstream announced Wednesday the company is offering 71,000 customers in North Georgia faster online speeds because of a broadband upgrade in north Georgia.

Company officials made a promise to increase speeds last year from 100 Mbps to 300 Mbps to 67,000 customers and exceeded that promise by 4,000 homes, according to J. Berkshire, the president of operations in Georgia.

“Windstream is committed to bringing best-in-class Internet and entertainment services to our customers in communities across all of Georgia,” Berkshire said. “That’s why we’re using a variety of technologies – software enhancements, fiber expansion that includes fiber to the premise and shorter loop lengths and, increasingly, fixed wireless – to meet customer demand for faster broadband speeds.”

However, Congressman Doug Collins of Gainesville is not impressed by this latest move by the company. He said, “Windstream is notorious for over promising and under delivering when it comes to increasing speeds and improving service. While I’m glad to hear Windstream has announced they will offer increased speeds in Northeast Georgia and I am hopeful they will follow through on their promise this time, there is still significant room for improvement, and I will continue to work to strengthen reliable access to rural broadband.”

The company offers cable TV services to people in parts of Banks, Dawson, Habersham, Jackson, Lumpkin, Towns, Union, and White counties.
