In a Memorial Day tradition in Hall County, the Hall County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard in collaboration with Hall County Fire Services Honor Guard members are observing the day with a 24-hour vigil in honor of those who have died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.
The vigil got underway at 12 a.m. Monday in the veterans’ section of Memorial Park Cemetery on Memorial Park Drive.
The commemoration involves honor guard sentries marching throughout the day.
Individual honor guard members will march for 30-45 minutes before maneuvering to hand off to the next sentry, according to information provided by the Hall County Sheriff's Office. Each member will march three to five times during the 24 hours.
Just before noon on Memorial Day, Sheriff Gerald Couch will deliver remarks in the cemetery before a 21-gun salute. "To the Colors" will be played at noon as the American flag, lowered to half-staff at 12 a.m., is raised.
Honor guard members will continue the vigil until the final sentry is relieved at 12 a.m. Tuesday.
Members of the public are invited to observe at any point during the day.
