Two people were able to safely escape a Wednesday-morning fire at a house on Maple Forge Lane in Gainesville thanks to smoke detectors that alerted them to the danger.

Gainesville Fire Department Division Chief Keith Smith said crews were called to the scene around 5 a.m.

When they arrived at the scene, firefighters found that a fire that had started in a basement garage had spread into the attic.

"As the fire moved through the attic, it did cause an attic collapse which then fell into the interior of the house," Smith said in a press statement.

As a result, the house is a total loss, according to Smith.

"The occupants have family nearby and will be staying with them," Smith said.

The Gainesville Fire Marshal's Office will investigate to determine a cause.
