The unemployment rate for the Gainesville metro area increased in June, but State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said Gainesville set another record for total jobs during the month.
In numbers released Thursday morning, Butler said Gainesville's unemployment rate rose in June, increasing by 0.3 percentage points to settle at 3.1 percent. A year ago, the rate was 3.6 percent. The rate is below both the state and national level for June, which was reported last week at 3.7 percent.
Butler said preliminary numbers for Gainesville showed monthly gains in jobs, labor force and employed residents, reflecting similar gains posted statewide.
"June was a very strong month for Georgia," Butler said. "A number of local communities set records as the state added more than 20,000 jobs. Plus, we continued to add to our labor force and see the number of unemployment claims fall. Our local communities continue to prosper."
Gainesville ended June with 96,600 jobs. The MSA added 300 new jobs over the month and 4,600 jobs when compared to this time last year.
Gainesville also posted gains for jobs in private services.
The labor force increased in June by 606 to reach 104,296. That number is up by 2,238 from the total of June 2018.
