A state of emergency was declared Thursday by Gov. Brian Kemp for 12 coastal area Georgia counties ahead of Hurricane Dorian.

Kemp signed an executive order that frees up state resources for emergency preparations and response. It also prohibits price gouging for goods and services such as gasoline.

The National Hurricane Center predicts Dorian will come ashore during the Labor Day weekend as a powerful Category 4 hurricane. While the current forecast track predicts landfall in Florida, forecasters haven’t ruled out a turn toward southeast Georgia.

Kemp’s emergency declaration covers all 100 miles of the Georgia coast, an area that includes Savannah (Chatham County), as well as several neighboring counties to the west - Brantley, Bryan, Camden, Charlton, Effingham, Glynn, Liberty, Long, McIntosh, Pierce, and Wayne.

Hurricane Dorian, seen from the International Space Station late Thursday afternoon, as it churned over the Atlantic north of Puerto Rico. The storm is expected to intensify as it moves toward the U.S. mainland drawing new energy from the warm, open waters as it closes in. (NASA via AP)
