Gwinnett magistrate judge dies from injuries suffered in Dec. 21 pedestrian accident

Eleven days after she was hit by a vehicle near downtown Buford, Gwinnett Senior Magistrate Judge Emily Powell has died from her injuries.

The Gwinnett County Police Department said Powell was crossing West Moreno Street near South Lee Street the night of Dec. 20 when she was hit by a pick-up truck. She died from her injuries Tuesday, Dec. 31.
 
A police reported identified the driver of the truck as Obed Arreola Toledo, 41, of Buford. The report said Toledo left the scene of the accident without contacting police, but later called them. The vehicle involved was impounded at that time. There is no indication charges have been filed at this point in the investigation.

The police department said in a news release that Judge Powell was one of the original Gwinnett County magistrates where she served the court for over 20 years  She attended the Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer. Based on her experience, she was routinely tasked with helping train and mentor new judges in Gwinnett County.  Judge Powell was also a graduate of Leadership Gwinnett and active with Gwinnett Senior Leadership. She leaves behind a husband and two children.
