A Lawrenceville Police Department Officer was injured and a suspect was shot and killed during a Wednesday evening altercation at a fast food restaurant.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said the incident unfolded just before 5:30 p.m. when the officer responded to a trespass call at Wendy's at 165 Scenic Highway. The Gwinnett Daily Post reported the trespasser, later identified as Albert Lee Hughes, 47, entered the Wendy's and began drinking a beer in the dining area.
When the officer approached Hughes, the man picked up a chair and began to attack the officer, according to a press statement from the GBI.
"Hughes continued to attack the officer, causing the officer to fall to the floor," the statement read. "The officer discharged his Taser in an attempt to stop the attack. The Taser was not effective."
The GBI said Hughes continued to use the chair to assault the officer while the officer was on the ground.
At some point during the attack, the officer discharged his service weapon and struck Hughes.
Hughes died at a local hospital, according to the GBI statement. The officer was treated for minor injuries.
The GBI is conducting an independent investigation of the incident.
