Members of the Gainesville Kiwanis Club joined Kiwanians across Georgia on Tuesday by participating in the inaugural Read Across Georgia Day.

The event was created to promote reading among young students to help them read on grade level before they finish the third grade. Studies have shown that if a student isn’t reading on grade-level by third grade, it increases the likelihood that student won’t graduate from high school.

The event was also a part of the 105th anniversary of Kiwanis International.

In Gainesville and Hall County, Megan Martin read to students in Mrs. Buffington’s Kindergarten class at Chestnut Mountain Elementary; Angela Sheppard read to Mrs. Chambers third-grade class at Riverbend Elementary and Ron Combs and Tiffany Ellis read to students at McEver Elementary School.
