Power was interrupted Sunday night in Gainesville along the Jesse Jewell Parkway corridor after a garbage truck struck a power pole.

A spokesman for the Gainesville Police Department says the truck also “got tangled up” in the powerlines, causing two power poles to break.

“Fortunately the backup systems on the traffic signals prevented any service loss from those devices, so traffic was not significantly impacted,” Lt. Justin Martin wrote in an email.  “Georgia Power arrived quickly and were able to restore power to most of the area while the repair work is being completed.“

Lt. Martin said, however, the utility was expecting repair work to “continue well into the morning and power will be disrupted again at some point during that process.”

He added that Spring Street was closed between West Academy Street and Main Street and Maple Street was closed between Broad Street and Washington Street.  “These closures will remain in effect until the repair is completed tomorrow (Monday),” Martin said.
