The man who served as the first principal of Mt. Vernon Elementary School in Hall County died Thursday, Feb. 20 at the age of 66.
Wayne Colston was a lifelong educator, beginning his professional career as a teacher, coach and assistant principal at what was then South Hall Junior High School. Colston also served for five years as the principal at Chestnut Mountain Elementary School before being named principal of Mt. Vernon Elementary in 1993. In his role, Colston oversaw the design and construction of the school in the North Hall district. Under his leadership, the school received the Georgia School of Excellence Award.
Colston earned his BSN in Science, his Master of Art and his Educational Specialist degrees from the University of Georgia.
Funeral services for Colston will be held Saturday, Feb. 22 at 3 p.m. at Gainesville First United Methodist Church at 2780 Thompson Bridge Road in Gainesville.
