A Maysville man is in custody in Banks County, charged with ripping off people to the tune of more than $75,000 for contracting work he never performed.

Investigators with the Banks County Sheriff's Office confirmed the arrest of Marshall Whitman Dyches, 30, on two counts of felony theft by deception. Capt. Jerald Watson said in a brief email statement that specific details on the Banks County crimes would not be released, since the investigation remains active and more charges could be forthcoming. A booking report indicates Dyches was arrested on Saturday, Feb. 29.

The Commerce Police Department also arrested Dyches for two similar crimes in its jurisdiction. Detective Galloway confirmed in a phone interview that Dyches was arrested on one felony count and one misdemeanor count of theft by deception. The felony count involved a $10,000 theft. In the Commerce cases, according to Galloway, Dyches would ask for a down payment on contracting work but never do any of the jobs he promised to do.

Hall County Sheriff's Office spokesman Derreck Booth confirmed Dyches was arrested on Feb. 15 at the Madison County Jail on misdemeanor charges of theft by deception for stealing $1,000 from a victim on Chestatee Road. Booth said the victim reported paying Dyches in December for the purchase and fabrication of countertops for a home. Dyches never performed the work or provided the countertops and he never returned the money.

In Madison County, Dyches was arrested Feb. 14 and charged with felony theft by deception, and two counts of felony deposit account fraud (bad checks), said Chief Deputy Jeffrey Vaughn. He was released to Hall County deputies on Feb. 15 after posting a $5,050 bond.

Investigators believe Dyches may be wanted for similar offenses in other North Georgia counties.
