Another dry day is forecast for Monday, the fourth straight for the first time in many places in Georgia since December but Tuesday will bring with it another round of showers.
Recapping another rainy week, the National Weather Service says many parts of Georgia measured more than four inches of rain last week. Gainesville, Athens, and Atlanta were among the places reporting 3-4 inches, while totals in the 4-6 inch range were common across central Georgia. But, beyond that, the report says that “even more impressive” is how much rain the state has had so far this year.
Some spots have seen over 25 inches which is 2 to 2.5 times the normal. Athens, Atlanta, and Macon have had more rain so far this year than any year since record-keeping began in the late 1800s. Columbus is very close to the record as well. Gainesville is running 9.49 inches above normal for the year. So far this month, 3.6 inches have been recorded, while in February the total was 10.84 inches, and in January it was 7.52, according to the NWS.
The rains that begin on Tuesday will continue the pattern of recent weeks with showers occurring most of the week. However, the NWS says the "good news" is that rains this week are not likely to be as heavy as last week and in some recent weeks. "Over a 4-day period, current forecast rainfall totals will range from 0.1 inch to 1.5 inches (with the higher totals across north Georgia)," according to a posting on the agency's Facebook page.
