Elberton woman jailed in connection to residential fire

An Elberton woman faces charges in connection with a fire that destroyed a residence last week.

The State Insurance and Fire Safety Commissioner's Office said the home on Dunn-Worley Road was set on fire Thursday, March 12, and 37-year-old Erin Libby was arrested the following day. For now, Libby has been charged with criminal damage to property in the second degree.

Commissioner John King said no one was home when Elbert County emergency officials arrived at the scene. Libby was located a short distance away from the fire by deputies with the Elbert County Sheriff's Office. Libby had been wanted on previous warrants, and after she was interviewed, she was arrested in connection to the fire.

"On behalf of the agency, I would like to thank the local law enforcement professionals for their professional work this case," King said.

Second degree criminal damage to property is punishable by one to five years in prison, according to King.

Libby is the 21st suspect to be arrested with the assistance of the State’s Fire Investigations Unit in 2020.
