As the coronavirus pandemic continues, Gainesville City leaders have decided to wait a few more weeks before restoring some community services.
Community Service Center (CSC) Director Phillippa Lewis Moss said Friday the Gainesville-Hall County Senior Life Center will remain closed through May 15, and the closure could extend beyond that date, depending on the progression of the virus in the community.
The closure of the Center also impacts Meals on Wheels. CSC staff and volunteers have worked to provide more meals during each delivery so that Meals on Wheels and Senior Life Center clients have minimal contact with works. Fewer deliveries have also become necessary because fewer volunteers have been available during the pandemic.
A press release from the city said when CSC’s regular food supplier encountered difficulty meeting local needs, city leaders enlisted the services of Brenau Catering to cook and package 6,000 meals for delivery starting Friday, April 17. With CSC not equipped to store so many meals, Syfan Logistics donated a refrigerated trailer, plus the fuel, for as long as the need exists. To assist further, Lanier Tent Rental donated a set of stairs to help CSC staff and volunteers access the commercial trailer easily and safely.
Additionally, Gainesville Connection transportation services will be suspended through May 15. Dial-A-Ride continues to operate weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.; trips are prioritized for groceries, pharmacy supplies and medical appointments.
