Gainesville police identify shooting suspect, ask for public help in the search

A suspect has been named in an Monday-night incident in Gainesville that left a 19-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the torso.

Gainesville Police Department detectives said they are looking for Luis Angel Sierra-Alegria, 22, of Gainesville. Sierra-Alegria is believed to be responsible for shooting Alex Sander Chavez, 19, behind Haverty's Furniture Store on Browns Bridge Road just after 8 p.m. Monday, April 27. 

"The information we have now is that an argument stemmed between two groups of people in the area of Gaines Drive," said Cpl. Jessica Van in an email statement to media. "Exact details leading up to the shooting behind Haverty’s [are] undetermined at this point."

While police were able to provide a photo of the suspect, Van said his hair is now believed to be shoulder length. 

Sierra-Alegria is wanted on charges of aggravated assault and aggravated battery.

Anyone who sees the suspect or knows where he might be is asked to call 911.
