A 20-year veteran of the Hall County Sheriff's Office died Monday, July 20 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center following a serious illness.

While sheriff's office officials did not offer specific information on the cause of Lt. Brian McNair's death, they did confirm he had tested positive for COVID-19 last week. McNair had been transported from his home in Habersham County to the Gainesville hospital on Sunday evening.

"The news of Lt. McNair’s passing came as a great shock to his family and his law enforcement family this morning," Hall County Sheriff Gerald Couch said in a published statement. "He will forever be remembered for his dedicated service to our country and the counties he served in Georgia. Words cannot express my desire for this community to pray for Lt. McNair’s family."

The 53-year-old McNair, who served in the HCSO Jail Division, last worked Thursday, July 9.

In addition to his work with the Hall County Sheriff's Office, McNair also worked for the Habersham County Sheriff's Office during his law enforcement career. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and the Georgia National Guard.

The Hall County Sheriff's Office is in the process of setting up a fund to benefit McNair's wife and their nine children.
