Gainesville road closure due to vaccine drive-thru

To assist Longstreet Clinic personnel in administering COVID-19 vaccines and drive-thru tests, the City of Gainesville is changing some traffic patterns.

The Gainesville City Council voted unanimously at its regular meeting Tuesday, Jan. 19, to temporarily close Broad Street between Prior and Spring streets, easing congestion associated with drive-thru COVID-19 testing and vaccine appointments.

“They believe closing down Broad Street for the next few weeks will help them with traffic flow,” said City Manager Bryan Lackey.

Longstreet Clinic may keep the roadway closed up to 90 days, but Lackey said city and clinic personnel, together, can re-evaluate the closure midway through.

“If we see that, say, in 60 days or 45 days that they don’t need that anymore, and it’s going smoothly, we can open the street back up,” he said, but the priority is to help Longstreet Clinic facilitate the care of patients.

“We think that’s just a good thing for us to do to help get the vaccine rolling out and them not have the added burden of extra traffic rolling through there,” Lackey added.
