A Jefferson man was killed Wednesday in a single-vehicle traffic accident on a rain-slickened road in Forsyth County.

Stacie Miller, Public Information Officer with the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office said the fatal accident happened around 12:45 p.m. on Browns Bridge Road near Little Mill Road. She identified the victim as Robert J. Phillips, 68.

"The on-scene investigation revealed a 2007 Crown Victoria was traveling east on Browns Bridge Road towards Little Mill Road," Miller wrote in a press statement. "The driver was in the process of passing slower traffic when he hydroplaned, lost control, and left the roadway.  After the vehicle left the roadway, it rotated and struck a tree, then continued backwards and struck a larger tree."

Miller said Phillips was unresponsive at the scene. He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead from his injuries.

Miller said there was no evidence of alcohol or drug impairment.
