As officials plan to build a pedestrian bridge connecting Johns Creek and Duluth, they will salvage 10 tons of steel from the historic bridge that's already there.
Rogers Bridge was built out of steel in 1911 and has been closed for about 40 years. The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports a $7.2 million replica will be put in its place at its namesake parks in Duluth and Johns Creek, which should be complete by the late fall of 2022.
Each city will get five tons of steel to repurpose, according to the paper. The steel will be striped of lead and paint before it is given to the public.
Each city and county is contributing $350,000 to the construction, splitting the $700,000 cost of engineering and design, the paper reports; the Atlanta Regional Commission will contribute $5.1 million.
The bridge runs over the Chattahoochee River.
