Gainesville native Dr. Thomas Weston Hodge III, the former Director of Immunogenetics at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, died July 31 in St. Simon's Island, Ga.
Hodge attended Emory University, the University of Georgia for graduate work and East Tennessee State University Quillen College of Medicine. Hodge authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, patents, IND and Orphan Drug applications during his career. In addition, he spent six years in an NIH study group. At the height of the AIDS epidemic, Hodge served as a Section Chief of Molecular Immunology a the National Center for Infectious Diseases at the CDC.
His obituary said he was "tirelessly devoted to helping people, curing disease and creating new approaches to medicine."
A celebration of Dr. Hodge's life was held on Saturday, Aug. 7 at St. Simon's Presbyterian Church.
