Tropical Depression Fred brought heavy winds and rain to Georgia Tuesday which added up to storm damage, possibly caused by a tornado, for parts of Banks County.
Banks County Fire/EMS Chief Steve Nichols said some homes in the county were destroyed by falling trees and several roads were washed out.
The three destroyed homes were located on Bennett Road and Hawkins Road. Nichols said a barn also collapsed on Payne Road, trapping several horses that were later rescued by fire personnel.
Nichols said it appears a tornado may have also touched down in the eastern side of the county. The National Weather Service is scheduled to visit the area Wednesday and determine whether the reports of a tornado were accurate.
As of 4 p.m. Tuesday, Yonah Homer Road, Wofford Creek Road and Daily Road have all been washed out. Nichols said these roads are expected to be closed for a while as culvert piping was washed out, causing them to collapse. Several other roads in Banks County also have limited access.
While several roads in the county were blocked earlier in the day due to downed trees, Nichols said they have now been cleared and opened.
