Georgia gas prices ticked up slightly this week in response to the threat of Hurricane Ian, according to the weekly fuel price report from AAA.
The agency said the average price for a gallon of regular gas ticked up six cents compared to the week prior. The new statewide average as of Monday was $3.17. That average was 17 cents less than a month ago and 19 cents more than this time last year.
As of Monday, it costs about $47.55 to fill a 15-gallon tank of regular gas. It costs about $3 less to fill up at the pump compared to a week ago.
“Georgia gas price average saw an uptick at the pumps last week due to the threat of Hurricane Ian,” Montrae Waiters, AAA-The Auto Club Group spokeswoman said. “Thankfully, the storm shifted further east away from Georgia’s coastline, causing minimal damage. If demand stays low and crude oil does not increase, gas prices could trend downward this week.”
Union and Habersham counties had the cheapest gas in Northeast Georgia on Monday, with averages of $3.03 and $3.09, respectively.
Meanwhile, Lumpkin and Jackson counties had the most expensive gas in the region. The average for a gallon of regular in Lumpkin County was about $3.27 as of Monday.
The national average for a gallon of regular increased by eight cents to $3.79 over the past week.
" Now that Hurricane Ian has passed and downgraded to a tropical storm, we continue to learn of its full impact in Florida," a release from AAA said. "Gasoline distribution may be limited in affected areas due to a lack of electricity and flooded roads and highways."
