No one was injured following a house fire in Rabun County on Wednesday morning.
Rabun County Fire Services arrived on the scene at around 8:30 a.m. According to a press release, the home had flames showing through the ridge of the roof.
RCFS said the fire was brought under control at 9:02 a.m. and units remained on scene until 10:35 a.m. checking for hotspots.
The occupant advised fire officials that he had a fire in his wood stove the night before and smelled smoke after waking the next morning. When he entered the living room area, there were flames coming from the walls on both sides of the chimney. He evacuated and called 911.
The fire is believed to be unintentional. The home sustained heavy fire damage as well as smoke and water damage.
Rabun County Fire Services reminds everyone to have their gas and wood-fired appliances checked annually prior to using them and to have working smoke alarms on each floor of their residence.
