When caught up in a battle against depression,
A platoon of cookies is the best suppression.

Choco Chip, Peanut Butter or Butterscotch,
These and others take the mood up a notch.

When the world turns gray, I get the aching
To lighten my load with a little baking.

I put on an apron and pull out the flour,
Life gets a bit brighter inside of an hour.

Eggs and vanilla, sugar and butter,
stirring the first and creaming the other.

Mix flour, salt and soda in the right measure,
putting them together brings great pleasure

I like to work with pecans that are roasted,
when baking with bourbon, I sometimes get toasted.

The creaming of the sugar and butter, the whir of the mixer,
Soon comes ‘nilla and eggs to act as the fixer.

‘Cause the dry stuff is now next in line,
The egg is there to help it combine.

The world melts away, nothing else matters
But the mixing and fixing of this great batter.

Whirring along, things just get sweeter,
But unplug the mixer before licking the beater.

Time to chill the dough in the refrigerator,
Now let it rest, then bake it up later.

When later arrives, we get productive,
The air soon perfumed with a fragrance seductive.

Then friends you call from near and from far,
Some come on foot, others by car.

Warm and sweet right from the oven,
So nice to share a plate full of lovin’.

Some advice for the taking,
From a guy who loves baking:

Whether from scratch as I love to make,
Or from dough in the tube, the ole Slice-n-Bake,

When life seems too heavy and troubles they pile,
Head for the kitchen and bake up a smile!
