A Hartwell man has been arrested in an apparent arson case in Hart County, the Office of the Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner said Wednesday.

James Cleveland, 50, faces a charge of Arson in the 1st Degree and Criminal Damage to Property in the case, which began with the March 12th fire.

The Office of the Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner says the 1400-square-foot residence on Wayne Circle in Hartwell is 58 years old, and had been empty for several years prior to the fire.

“The residence had been vacant since 2019 and had no utilities connected,” said Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner John F. King. “The fire damaged several rooms and the roof of the residence. Mr. Cleveland was subsequently arrested by the Hart County Sheriff’s Office as a result.”

Cleveland is being held at the Hart County Jail at last report.
