Two Hall County teachers received the distinguished C.W. Davis Scholarship, which will give them $500 to put toward an advanced degree. The C.W. Davis Scholarship gives financial assistance to Hall County teachers who wish to further a life-long career in education.

Lauren Sloan, a language arts teacher at Cherokee Bluff Middle School, and Christina Starlin, a visual arts teacher at West Hall High School, are both pursuing a master’s degree.

Sloan is working towards a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of North Georgia. In a press release, she also stated that she is pursuing an ESOL endorsement to support all learners.

“My passion for teaching is driven by a desire to craft curriculum that aligns with standards through building connections, empowering self-reflection, and through motivation,” Sloan said.

Starlin is studying at Piedmont University to receive her Master of Arts in Art Education. She credited her high school art teacher in a press release, who inspired her to become a teacher.

“After four years in education, I cannot imagine myself anywhere else,” Starlin said. “I’m here because of my students.”

Applicants must be Hall County teachers, who have completed between three to seven years of teaching. To become eligible for the scholarship, applicants must also plan to stay in an education-related field.

Additionally, they must already be enrolled in an education graduate degree program at one of the following institutions: Brenau University, Georgia State University, Piedmont College, the University of Georgia or the University of North Georgia.

Candidates are determined through a selection committee, which is comprised of Hall County administrators and a Davis family member.

The scholarship was created in 1999 to honor C.W. Davis, who served as principal of South Hall High School. He then became superintendent of Hall County from 1977-1983.
