A Blairsville man suffered possible serious injuries when his pickup truck rear-ended a dump truck Friday afternoon on Ga. 2 near Crooked Creek Connector in Towns County.

John Thacker, 42, was driving a 2019 Dodge Ram that struck the rear of a 1987 Ford dump truck that was traveling east on Ga. 2 about 3:40 Friday afternoon, said Sgt. B.D. Taylor of Georgia State Patrol Post 27 Blue Ridge.

The dump truck was driven by Jerrold Rusk, 57, of Blairsville, who complained of minor injury but was not transported.

Thacker was airlifted to Northeast Georgia Medical Center by the Blairsville-based AirLife Georgia 14 helicopter.

According to GSP, the pickup truck was traveling east on Ga. 2 in the left travel lane. The dump truck was traveling east on Ga. 2 in the right travel lane, hauling a load of asphalt. Thacker began to change lanes from the left lane to the right lane as traffic slowed in front of him, then his vehicle began passing the slower traffic and approaching the rear of the dump truck.

The pickup truck struck the rear of the dump truck with its front as they traveled uphill, just east of the Crooked Creek Connector intersection.

The Dodge Ram sustained disabling damage and came to a final rest in the roadway, blocking the right travel lane.

Charges are pending for Thacker, Taylor said.

The AirLife Georgia 14 medical helicopter arrives at Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport in Gainesville Friday afternoon to refuel after transporting an injured man from a wreck on Young Harris Mountain in Towns County.
