Nonprofit Sisu Integrated Early Learning has named Matt and Teresa Kahn as the winners of the 2023 Nancy Copper Sisu Spark Award.
Sisu is an early intervention school that serves children through innovative educational, therapeutic, nursing, and family support services in an inclusive environment. The award honors former board member, Nancy Copper. The honor is a Community Award that celebrates Grit, Tenacity, Bravery, and Resilience.
Matt and Teresa are the owners of Puzzle Piece Pastries of Gainesville, a non-profit bakery that employs disabled adults. The couple was inspired to create an inclusive and accommodating work environment within the community by their son, who is on the autism spectrum. The bakery offers accommodations to those with autism and other special needs, providing them with job opportunities and giving them the ability to work, socialize, build their confidence, and thrive in their environment.
“Through Puzzle Piece Pastries, Matt and Teresa’s commitment to inclusivity is at the heart of their operation,” a release from Sisu reads. “The Nancy Copper Sisu Spark Award highlights the bakery’s innovative approach to fostering a more inclusive community. Their mission to provide meaningful employment opportunities to individuals with disabilities, particularly those on the autism spectrum, has set an inspiring example to other businesses in the Gainesville community.”
