Two people were seriously injured after a two-vehicle wreck Tuesday afternoon on Highway 197 in Habersham County.

The Georgia State Patrol said the wreck happened at about 3 p.m. near the roadway's intersection with Blacksnake Road outside of Clarkesville.

Mary Lou Demore, 87, of Clarkesville, was reportedly driving a GMC Terrain and stopped at the stop sign on Blacksnake Road.

The second vehicle, a Honda Civic being driven by Billie Ann Tarango, 25, of Mount Airy, was driving north on Highway 197 and negotiating a curve.

Demore reportedly failed to yield after stopping at the stop sign and traveled into the intersection in front of Tarango. The GMC struck the front of the Civic.

Both Demore and Tarango suffered suspected serious injuries. They were taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

Highway 197 and the end of Blacksnake Road were closed for approximately one hour while the Georgia State Patrol investigated and towing operators were called to clear the scene.

The vehicle that came to rest off the road and down a nearby embankment on Highway 197 and Blacksnake Road in Habersham County.
