CARROLLTON, Ga. — It was a tough opening day for northeast Georgia area girls wrestling teams at the State Duals.
None of the trio of Chestatee, Gainesville, or Lumpkin County could make it out of the second round in their bids for a state title at the University of West Georgia.
Gainesville opened with a 57-24 win over Richmond Hill and Lumpkin County beat Houston County 54-30 to move into the second round. Chestatee, however, was knocked off in the opening round, 48-36 by Osborne.
In the Elite 8 round, Gainesville fell to No. 2 seed and defending state champion Carrollton, 54-30. Meanwhile, Lumpkin County dropped a 51-27 decision to top-seed Greenbrier.
The losses dropped all three teams into the consolation bracket where they will wrestle for a chance at third place. Chestatee stayed alive with a 48-30 win over Shiloh and will take on Woodward Academy on Saturday.
Also on Saturday, Gainesville will take on Houston County and Lumpkin County will get Richmond Hill with a chance to stay alive.
