Another phase of the widening project on I-85 has been completed.
This is the Georgia Department of Transportation’s (GDOT) Phase III project, which widened I-85 north and southbound from two to three lanes between U.S. 129 and 441.
The project also replaced and widened four mainline bridges on I-85 in two locations.
The project was completed on Thursday for the I-85 corridor in Jackson and Banks counties.
Crews were able to complete final design and construction in just over two years with a $141.9-million investment.
The project built on Phase I and II, which were completed in 2020 and 2023, respectively.
“This is a significant segment of roadway at 13 miles of construction, and we could not be more excited to have this completed and open for the public,” GDOT Project Manager Alicia Ashburn said. "We appreciate the patience of motorists and our stakeholder partners and look forward to delivering future interstate improvements up to the South Carolina state line."
This phase began in July of 2022 with the full project reveal finishing this week.
GDOT said that in the coming weeks, motorists may see crews completing final pavement markings, placing final signage, and more.
