JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – Despite trailing at halftime, 23-22, Gainesville outscored Chattahoochee 33-3 in the second half on the way to a 55-26 win Friday night.
The Red Elephants led 22-10 with just over three minutes to go in the first half before Chattahoochee rattled off a pair of touchdowns in the final three minutes to take the lead into halftime. Carmelo Byrd took over in the third quarter, scoring three touchdowns in the first five minutes of the third quarter before Sergio Ruiz scored on a 25-yard touchdown catch. Big Red then blocked a punt, allowing Jamarcus Sims to score a touchdown to cap the 33-point third quarter.
Kharim Hughley was 14-of-23 for 227 yards and a pair of touchdowns, both to Jeremiah Ware, while Byrd carried the football 11 times for 125 yards and four touchdowns. Ware had four catches for 91 yards with his two touchdowns.
Gainesville will wrap up the regular season next week with a big matchup at Roswell.
