A Marathon gas station in Dillard was declared a total loss after a fire broke out earlier this afternoon.

Rabun County received a call for a structure fire in a commercial building located at 6676 Highway 441 North at approximately 12:14 p.m.

When personnel arrived on scene they found both smoke and fire coming through the roof of the structure.

Fire crews initially attacked the interior of the building but had to move into a defensive attack due to roof conditions.

They then used a ladder truck to ventilate the roof and began extinguishing the flames from an elevated position until the fire was declared under control.

Personnel were able to leave the scene shortly after 4:30 p.m.

Highway 441 North was temporarily shut down due to the use of hoses that stretched across the highway.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office was contacted for investigation and no injuries were reported.

No cause for the fire has been released as of last report.
