The Georgia Board of Regents voted Tuesday to approve a proposal that will allow for the creation of a new medical school at the University of Georgia in Athens.
According to a report from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the board approved the proposal unanimously.
The vote follows a January announcement from Governor Brian Kemp regarding the proposed creation of the state's second public medical school.
Officials have previously said the new school aims to help address the state's physician shortage.
The AJC reported the board did not discuss a timeline pertaining to the creation of the school.
As part of the creation process, the school must seek accreditation with the Liaison Committee on Medical Education's standards. Additionally, it must secure funding for a new facility. The total cost of the new facility is expected to be about $100 million.
