GAINESVILLE, Ga. — Smith McGarvey ripped a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Gainesville a thrilling 2-1 win over Flowery Branch in both teams' season openers at Ivey-Watson Field on Wednesday.
The game was scoreless pitcher's duel until the ninth. The Falcons (0-1) had scored a run in the top of the inning when Luke Stone came around to score after being hit by a pitch.
Flowery Branch got solid pitching from Kyle Adamec (4.0 IP, 0R, 7K, 3H), London Moshiri (3.0 IP, 1R, 3K, 2H), and Colin Basham, who took the tough-luck loss giving up an unearned run in 1 1/3 innings.
Anthony Almeroth, Jackson Freeman and Adamec each had one hit for the Falcons.
Flowery Branch next will travel to Lumpkin County on Friday.
Gainesville (1-0) heads to Prince Avenue on Thursday.
