GAINESVILLE, Ga. — The Gainesville boys had a shot with 10 seconds remaining to tie the game.
It didn’t go in.

Gainesville (16-7, 9-2 Region 7-5A) led 10-9 at the end of the first quarter, but Milton (18-6, 11-0 Region 7-5A) rushed to lead in the second quarter thanks to the hot hand of Braxton Giesler, who hit nine of his 11 points from 3-point land. Milton scored 15 of their 21 second-quarter points from the 3-point line to take a 30-21 lead into the locker room at halftime.
However, the Red Elephants slowly chipped away at the Eagles’ lead in the third quarter, led by KJ White, Caden Jackson, Xavier Griffin, Charlie Gersmehl and Brandon Nelson.
Nelson hit a 3-pointer with 2:31 left, and Jackson nailed a bucket to tie the game, 37-37, with less than two minutes to go in the quarter. Nelson’s 1-of-2 trip to the foul line and Gersmehl’s 2-pointer gave Gainesville a 40-37 advantage at the end of the third.
With just over five minutes left, Gainesville held on to the lead, 42-40, but Milton’s Daniel Ogunyemi and Soloman Bratton pushed the Eagles back in front, 43-42, with 4:11 to go.
The Eagles held off Gainesville down the stretch as Big Red cut the lead to one point twice in the final 1:30 of the game.
