Hall County Tax Commissioner Darla Eden is looking to return thousands of dollars in tax refunds to taxpayers stemming from overpayments.
The refunds primarily involve overpayments on motor vehicle and property taxes as well as from changes in property values (typically after an appeal).
The accounting division of the Tax Commissioner’s Office is using current address and telephone numbers from its records as well as online tools and subscriber services to track down taxpayers for their refunds.
“When we can’t find the owner, unfortunately, we must turn these funds over to the Georgia Unclaimed Property Division as required by law,” Eden said.
Eden also reminds all residents that the Unclaimed Property division of Georgia’s Department of Revenue has a website for residents to easily claim unclaimed monies stemming from uncashed checks for security deposits, overpayments, utility deposits, medical refunds, and other related transactions.
“The state’s website is free and easy to navigate,” Eden said. “For convenience, our local department’s website provides quick links on our home page to key areas on the state’s website.”
