The Hall County Board of Education voted to approve the former Riverbend Elementary School building to be turned into a Nutrition Food Science Center.

The board voted on the use of the building during its Monday meeting.

The decision will allow the building to be used to house the district’s school food service nutrition department. It will also allow for the district’s food processing program to use the building's cafeteria.

Riverbend and White Sulfur Elementary Schools closed at the end of the 2023-24 school year to form Sandra Dunagan Deal Elementary School. The district previously announced that White Sulfur’s building would be renovated to create a second Ivester Early College in the north end of the County.

Executive Director of Facilities and Construction Matt Cox said renovations for the building are well underway, with some of the projects on campus in the later phase of development. He explained that HCSD students are able to work on-site to complete the project through one of the district’s Career, Technical & Agricultural Education programs.

“We have a program called ‘Trades and Trainings,’” Cox said. “They’re led by Rodney Presley. And [Presley] brings a group of kids out [to the school] every day… to come out and work, getting hands-on construction experience on that property.”

The new campus is expected to be completed for the upcoming school year.
