Hall County residents will not be permitted to burn anything over the next five months.

That’s due to an annual statewide burn ban according to Hall County Fire Marshal Michael Vieira.

“The burn ban is a statewide burn ban that was enacted by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division back in 2005,” Vieira said. “There’s about 54 counties throughout the state that are affected by this burn ban.”

According to the Georgia Environmental Protection Division, the ban was implemented during the summer ozone season to reduce health risks for children and the elderly.

Vieira said any kind of residential burning like yard debris is not allowed and neither is commercial burning.

“Basically the only types of outdoor burning allowed are campfires or cooking fires,” Vieira said.

The ban will be in place from May 1 to Sept. 30.

Vieira said if anyone needs to report illegal burning during the ban to call 9-1-1. He said the penalty is generally a citation but it is up to the officer’s discretion.

Other area counties under the ban include Banks, Barrow, Dawson, Forsyth, Gwinnett, Jackson, and Lumpkin Counties. A full list can be found here.
