Red Cross moving tornado operations to Dawsonville

GAINESVILLE - The American Red Cross will move its emergency disaster operations service center from the Cool Springs Baptist Church in Tate to the Northeast Georgia Chapter Service Center in Dawsonville Tuesday.

Red Cross workers have contacted most Pickens County residents needing immediate assistance since last Monday's storm. Officials say few people are now visiting the center, but Red Cross will continue to maintain the Emergency Service Center at the new site as long as needed.

Forty-eight volunteers and one full-time staff member have been participating in the Pickens County Red Cross effort. Most of the volutneers are from the Gainesville-based Northest Georgia Chapter.

A total of 53 requests for assistance have been opened since the storm, and volunteers have served 2,358 meals and snacks.

The tornado destroyed 26 homes in Pickens County and damaged scores of others. Two businesses and a church were also damaged. There were a few minor injuries.

The twister was part of line of severe storms that struck early last Monday, causing damage in a number of north Georgia counties, including Hall, Bartow, and Dawson, in addition to Pickens.
