UNDATED - From the mountains to metro Atlanta, the return of winter weather to Georgia touched off a sudden burst of snow in some places Wednesday morning, resulting in some traffic problems.
With the snow and ice that hit the area DOT deicing crews are are out in force on the traditional trouble areas and plan to cover a greater area. With temperatures so low, crews face potential icing even in daylight hours. Wind chills and low sun levels tend to hinder deicing efforts.
The snow was enough to cause officials in Union and Fannin counties to close schools for the day.
Traffic accidents, which may have been weather-related, resulted in major traffic jams on Georgia Highway 60 in Lumpkin County, Cleveland Highway north of Gainesville, and, on Georgia 400 in Fulton County.
Lumpkin County school officials advised students about 8:00 that if they could not safely make it to school, they should turn around and go back home.
Georgia Department of Transportation crews worked well into the day on patches of ice that were causing problems in Hall and several other northeast Georgia counties.
Highway 19 near the Union and White county line was one of the worst places.
In Forsyth County, a section of Georgia 400 was closed for several hours because of ice.
